"How can I get members to contribute to my group?" Q: My Small Group has met for more than a year and I host and facilitate the group in my home. Recently, I asked the group to take ownership of specific areas of group life, but no one responds. In the beginning, we agreed to a set of guidelines (covenant or contract) with specific roles and expectations as a group, like sharing responsibility for hosting and refreshments. It’s just that no one follows through on what they agreed to. How can I get group members to take ownership? A: Thanks for your question. I recommend calling the group members individually to encourage their participation. At the next meeting, reaffirm the guidelines the group agreed on. If necessary, change the guidelines to reflect what members have committed to.
Also, try passing around a sign-up form each month. Have group members take responsibility in areas by putting their name on the form under specific headings, such as: Host Home, Refreshments, Worship Activity, etc. Other activities that can be assigned monthly or seasonally include a Group Social Event or Service Project. Ask someone to make reminder calls each week to those who have a responsibility. If members don’t follow through, don’t cover for them, but allow them to own their task. |
