Q:  How can I get our Group Members to apply more of what we are learning from our study?

A:  A great tool to use in your Small Group is what I call "Asking The Dangerous Question."

I believe that there are a couple of significant parts in a small group.

The first part is when we hear the Word Of God - when we receive Truth.  We do this when we study the Bible and/or curriculum and seek to understand the content.

The second part is when we do the Word of God - when we experience Truth.  James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.”   One of the practical ways to move from being hearers of the Word to being doers of the Word is to ask this dangerous question -

What does this Truth (what I just learned) look like in my/your life?

Here are a couple of examples of what it will “look like” when you ask this question…

(Small Group Leader) “In small group tonight, we learned from James 1:19 that we are to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.  Let’s pretend that there are a couple of us in our group that are angry at one another.  In our small group, what would doing this verse look like? Are you all open to role-playing this?”

(Small Group Leader)  "We learned tonight that should love one another.  Pick an individual in your life.  What
does loving one another look like this week with that person?"

As you can see in these examples, asking this question causes a person to take the truth they know in their head and move it into their everyday lives.

By the way, the reason that this is a dangerous question, is that by asking and answering this question on a regular basis, we will begin to change - we will become more like Jesus - guaranteed!
